The first race of the season has come and gone. These two-day races always seem to wreak havoc and bring out the worst in people. This was definitely the case this weekend. Between all the beating and banging and pile-ups, nobody was safe from danger.
Early reports called for rain on Saturday, which caused a lot of pandemonium between drivers and promoters. Needless to say, the rain never came.
The USCS Modifieds were set to time trial on Friday. Paul was the third car out and set 13th fastest time, which put him in the third starting spot in the first heat. He managed to snake by the chaos and take the checkered in third. Paul would start seventh in the main event on Saturday.
After several minutes of brainstorming, the decision was made to take the top off the car and put a new spoiler on it. It would eventually turn out to be a good decision. Paul took some hot lap sessions on Saturday in order to get used to the big change. A hole in the track caused him to spin and collect another car on the front end, smashing his bumper in. Once the bumper was replaced it was time for the feature.
This 30 lap race started around 30 cars. There were several cautions at the start of the race, but they eventually got things going. They went 10 laps caution-free until there was a spin in turn two. Paul nosed in on cars in front of him, but to no avail. Finally he saw a clearing and started to take down cars one after another. A car in front of Paul had to check up and got sideways right in his path…
Red Flag…
The only thing touching the ground was Paul’s back tires. The front of the car ended up underneath another car’s decking. After 10 minutes of waiting the two were finally detached and racing could resume. On the restart, Paul found himself in the third position. A driver rooted Paul in turn one, causing him to lose two spots. The same driver brought out the caution by stopping on the track. Paul managed to get by the fourth place car at the drop of the green flag and carried his position to finish in fourth place behind Robert Powers, Chris Moore, and Hunter Rasdon.
Oh by the way, we pulled into our driveway at midnight and it started to rain.
